Men's Basketball Tips Off Season Monday vs. Maine
10/31/2025 10:36:00 AM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - The 50th anniversary season of the Charles E. Smith Center, presented by Vanda Pharmaceuticals, gets underway for men's basketball on Monday night as it welcomes Maine for an 8 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
Tickets are still available and also feature admission to the women's basketball game at 5 p.m. vs. UDC.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
On paper, this year's team appears the deepest of any of Coach Caputo's four teams with 11 players having at least one year of college basketball experience and nine scholarship upperclassmen.
GW is one of just four teams in the country, and the only non-Power 4 school, to have nine players on its roster that have started 20 or more games at the Division I level. Only Indiana (10) has more while Vanderbilt and USC match GW's nine.
RAISED EXPECTATIONS
Last year, GW recorded the 16th 20-win season in the program's 111 years, doing so for the first time in eight years (2016-17) and tallying 20 regular-season wins for the first time since 2015-16.
The bar has been raised, as the Buff & Blue are projected to finish fourth in the A-10 preseason poll, matching the highest mark since prior to the 2015-16 season that ended in an NIT Championship.
GW tied for a league-high with four players - Rafael Castro (1st Team), Tre Dinkins (2nd), Trey Autry (3rd) and Christian Jones (3rd) - named to preseason All-Conference teams.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS
Maine had one of its best seasons in recent memory in 2024-25, making the America East Finals for the first time in 20 years and posting a 20-14 campaign. Head coach Chris Markwood is 48-48 in three seasons at Maine, the most wins for a Black Bear head coach in his first three years since 1958-60.
This year, Maine tied for second in the America East preseason poll behind only perennial contender Vermont. The challenge for the Black Bears will be replacing their top five scorers and four of their five regular starters from last season.
Headlining the newcomers is freshman Ace Flagg, the younger brother of this year's NBA No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg.
Tickets are still available and also feature admission to the women's basketball game at 5 p.m. vs. UDC.
