Coming off a thorough wire-to-wire against Dayton Saturday, when the GW men's basketball team hit the road for Wednesday's clash at Rhode Island, the program was looking to add a slew of additional accolades to its resume.
In search of its second-straight win against a Top-100 team - the first time the Revolutionaries would pull the feat since the 2015-16 NIT Champions did so -- and looking for its first conference road win in more than a calendar year after beating VCU in Richmond on Jan. 6, 2024, George Washington accomplished both in yet another thriller in which the building-program showcased admirable resiliency. After leading by as many as 15 in the first half before taking a 38-30 into intermission, the GW Revs saw the Rhody Rams butt their way back in it and assume a second-half lead, but undaunted George Washington landed the final punch in the 76-67 road win.
Once again playing without All-Conference performer Darren Buchanan Jr., and this time minus fellow starter Trey Moss as well, GW got contributions from up and down the roster in a complete team win. Starting in place of Moss, Trey of the Autry family got the nod and responded with eight points and six rebounds in the first half, shooting 3-of-3 in process after also not missing a shot in Saturday's win against Dayton. While he finally missed in the second half when Rhode Island moved to a 2-3 zone defense in its comeback attempt, Autry nevertheless completed his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Christian Jones kept the career-highs coming, this time needing only a half to set a new mark in assists, registering six of GW's 13 first-half dimes on the team's 17 opening stanza field goals. Jones' six helpers led the team, but not by much as Cornell transfer Sean Hansen enjoyed his finest all-around game in Buff & Blue. Playing a season-high 31 minutes, Hansen matched his season-high with five assists, as GW went on to assist on 20 of 28 field goals made. He was also one of seven players to score between eight and 16 points for the visitors, led by Rafael Castro's 16, while Hansen also tied for team-high honors with a pair of steals and blocks on the defensive end.
While neither team shot the ball well from deep, the difference in the game was GW's ability to turn defense into offense, using 15 Rams' turnovers to outdo the hosts in points off turnovers, 18-8.
GW now returns home with significant momentum after a weekend bye to host Duquesne a week from tonight, Wednesday, January 15th at 7 p.m. live on ESPN+.
