WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball encounters its first repeat opponent of the season as it welcomes Richmond to the Smith Center Wednesday at 7 p.m. Live coverage is available on ESPN+.
Wednesday's game is the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers contest and the GW players will be sporting gold laces as part of the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative from the Go4theGoal foundation.
DEFENSE TRAVELS ... ESPECIALLY IN A-10 PLAY
GW is fourth in the A-10 in defensive efficiency (0.978 points per possession) and is third in defensive effective FG% (45.6%) despite playing five of the top six teams in the current standings.
GW has held five of its seven A-10 opponents to 1.000 ppp or less, and limited Dayton to its least efficient offensive game of the year while holding Rhode Island to its second-least efficient showing. The Buff & Blue limited Saint Louis to 6-of-28 (21.4%) from beyond the arc, the fifth time in seven games the opponent has been held below 30% 3-point shooting in league play.
JONES MAKING HIS MARK AS STARTING POINT GUARD
Christian Jones has taken his game to another level since moving into the starting lineup on Jan. 4th vs. Dayton, averaging 12.8 ppg, 4.5 apg and 2.3 spg during the last six games. Jones is the team's third-leading scorer during A-10 games at 11.7 ppg and has posted double figures in three-straight games for the first time in his young career (14.0 ppg, 4.7 apg).
The redshirt freshman has showcased a tremendous command of the offense with at least three assists in each of the last six games and he's ninth in the A-10 with 4.0 apg during league games. He also possesses a 1.9 A/TO ratio against conference foes, but has improved that to 3.0 (24 assists/eight turnovers) in the last five games.
Defensively, Jones is tied for third in A-10 play with 14 steals, seven of which came on Jan. 15 vs. Duquesne when he became the first player at GW with seven steals in a game since Lasan Kromah set the school record with nine swipes on December 28, 2011.
HISTORY VS. RICHMOND
Wednesday will be the 111th installment of GW vs. Richmond and the second of two matchups this season following the Spiders' 66-61 win on New Year's Eve. The Spiders are GW's most frequent opponent in program history, with the series dating back to 1925-26 and featuring conference matchups in the Southern Conference and the A-10.
Richmond has won nine of the last 10 and 13 of the previous 15 meetings in the series, including a two-game sweep last year. The Buff & Blue's last win vs. UR came on Feb. 8, 2023, 107-105, in double overtime at the Smith Center. GW has not defeated Richmond in regulation since a 103-77 thrashing on Feb. 21, 2018.
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS
Richmond enters Wednesday's action at 2-5 in the league, having dropped five-straight games after a 2-0 start. One of the main reasons for the struggles has been an injury to leading scorer DeLonnie Hunt, who fractured his foot at George Mason on Jan. 8. Hunt leads the Spiders with 16.8 ppg, 2.9 apg, 2.2 spg and 35.5 mpg.
In his absence, Dartmouth transfer Dusan Neskovic has taken on the brunt of the scoring load, now averaging 14.1 ppg. Neskovic had 17 points in the first meeting between the teams. Richmond has been held to 66 points or fewer in six of its seven A-10 games and is currently last in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency of 0.951 ppp, averaging 62.0 ppg in league play.
Defensively, UR is fourth in the A-10, allowing just 64.9 ppg in conference games and four of its five losses during the current streak have been by six points or fewer. Richmond possesses the fourth-best free shooting team in the country at 80.5% and has gotten 23% of its offense from the stripe this year.
