Men’s Basketball Earns Split With Richmond, 75-66
1/29/2025 9:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - In the first rematch the George Washington men's basketball team has faced this season, the Revolutionaries hosted Richmond Wednesday night, seeking revenge after falling on the road to the Spiders in the conference opener.
Payback was sought and payback was found in the 75-66 win in D.C., as the GW Revs earned the split after getting swept by Richmond last season. Now 4-4 in the A-10, with its foe falling to 2-6, just 10 games remain in the regular season before the all-important A-10 Championship at Capital One Arena in March. With the result, GW now finds itself in a five-way tie for fourth in the league, with the top-four seeds earning a double bye in the tournament.
Continuing a stretch of the best basketball in his burgeoning career, Rafael Castro did whatever he wanted to do to the Spiders. In a dominant 21-point, 15-rebound effort, Castro is showing why he's high among the ranks of the most impactful transfers in the country, after joining George Washington from Providence in the offseason. His points and rebounds led all players, and his all-around game featured three assists, a game-high tying two blocks and a steal, affecting all corners of the floor all night.
Paired with fellow transfer Gerald Drumgoole Jr., who rained down five more threes on the Spiders after dropping a career-high seven triples last month in Richmond, GW saw 40 of its 75 points and 22 of its 39 rebounds come from the '24-'25 transfers. As a team, the home squad canned 11-of-27 3-pointers and assisted on 17 of 23 field goal makes, while dominating at the free throw line, making more freebies (18) than Richmond attempted (8).
The Revolutionaries will look for their first three-game winning streak in conference play Saturday at La Salle on national television on USA at 2:30 p.m. The Buff & Blue's next home game comes a week from tonight, Wednesday, February 5, in a rematch with George Mason on Dean's List Night at Smith Center. Tip-off comes at 7 p.m.
