NEW YORK - The George Washington University water polo team (6-6, 2-1 MAWPC) finished out competition on Saturday with a 1-1 record, defeating (RV) Wagner on Saturday morning in Staten Island, 13-12, before being undone by No. 9 (T) Fordham, 20-9.
GW 13, (RV) WAGNER 12
The Revolutionaries battled the Seahawks, who were receiving votes in the latest polls, on Saturday morning in Staten Island looking to move to 2-0 in the MAWPC. The match was tight throughout as neither team held more than a one-goal lead after Wagner's 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. After trading goals throughout the match, the Revolutionaries found themselves down 11-10 midway through the fourth quarter, but GDUB closed the game on a 3-1 run to clinch the 13-12 victory.
Adonis Vlassis led the way on offense with three goals, while Joseph McCreary, Andrija Sekulic, Antonio Florena and Yam Kabakov each had two goals. Kabakov also added a game-high three field blocks and three steals. Luca Casotrina manned the net, making 14 saves and adding one assist to contribute on offense as well.
GW 9, NO. 9 (T) FORDHAM 20
GW traveled to the Bronx after its morning victory but could not replicate the same success, falling to an undefeated, top-ten ranked Fordham team. The Revolutionaries were outpaced by nine goals in the first half and trailed 11-2 at halftime, and while the offense got going in the second half, it wasn't enough to get back in the match as they fell 20-9.
Kabakov paced GW with three goals, while Florena scored twice as the only other GW student-athlete with multiple goals. Vlassis had a game-high two assists and two steals.
