Water Polo Picks Up Steam with 3-0 Weekend

(RV) GW takes down No. 20 (T) Bucknell, Mercyhurst and Mount St. Mary’s
EMMITSBURG, Md. - The (RV) George Washington University water polo team (9-6, 5-1 MAWPC) swept their MAWPC opposition this weekend, taking down No. 20 (T) Bucknell (13-12), Mercyhurst (21-11) and Mount St. Mary's (15-14) on the road.Â
(RV) GW 13, No. 20 (T) Bucknell 12
The Revolutionaries were looking for their first win over Bucknell since 2022 and had to do so against a top-20 ranked team. GW started quick and was up 4-1 in the second quarter, but the Bison stormed back and tied the match at 8-8 before taking a 10-8 lead in the third quarter. From there, GW was able to recapture some momentum and tied the match at 11 apiece halfway through the fourth, and late goals by Antonio Florena and Adonis Vlassis brought GDUB to the finish line in the 13-12 victory.
Florena paced the offense with five goals, trailed by Vlassis with four. Andrija Sekulic added two goals of his own and a game-high four assists, while goalkeeper Luca Castorina made 10 saves and dished two assists.
(RV) GW 21, Mercyhurst 11
GW was looking for the regular-season sweep vs. Mercyhurst after beating the Lakers by a final of 17-8 in the season-opening match, and for the second straight game vs. Mercyhurst, every rostered player got in on the action and contributed to the win. Vlassis led the way with four scores, followed by Kalan Smith and Florena with three apiece. Smith and Sekulic each added a team-high two assists. Castorina made 12 saves before he was replaced by Connor Jermain, who finished with five saves.Â
(RV) GW 15, Mount St. Mary's 14
The Revolutionaries and the Mount went to battle on Sunday morning and played a tight game from wire-to-wire. The teams were tied 7-7 at half and were within one goal of each other entering the final frame. Then tied at 13-13 in the last two minutes, GW went to its go-to scorer in Vlassis who gave GW a 14-13 lead. The Revolutionaries then got a stop on the defensive end and Sekulic scored the eventual game-winning goal with the shot-clock expiring. The Mount came back and got back within one, but they were not able to draw even as they fell in their home pool.
Vlassis paced GDUB with six goals, while Yam Kabakov followed with five goals and Sekulic dished a team-high four assists. Castorina made 10 saves and swiped three steals.
