WASHINGTON – Head Coach George Rodriguez and the George Washington tennis program have announced the addition of Julia Failla to the roster ahead of the 2024 fall semester. A native of Ramona, California, Failla arrives in Foggy Bottom after earning a bachelor's degree from Liberty in 2024.
"I'm extremely proud and honored to announce that Julia Failla will be joining the GW tennis team this fall," said Rodriguez. "Julia is an incredible example of fortitude, dedication and grit both on and off the court. Beating Lyme disease and stepping back on the court at the highest level is a testament of her strong will and commitment to life. Julia was blessed to have a second chance not just at tennis but at life. Her remarkable story should be an inspiration to us all that anything is possible if you fight for it and you have God on your side. Julia comes from a family with a strong tennis pedigree and is a genuinely good-hearted person who is ready to shine her light and put the college tennis scene on fire. She will fit right in with our team as we prepare for a new era within our program."
During her prep career, Failla was a promising prospect that earned an outstanding UTR score of 10.5 as a high school junior. She collected multiple junior titles along the west coast before being diagnosed with Lyme disease at the end of her high school career. The diagnosis forced her to step away from the game while she recovered, and she earned an online bachelor's degree from Liberty University in the process. Failla now joins GW as a graduate student looking to fulfill her dream of competing on a collegiate tennis team.
"I'm so excited to be attending George Washington this coming fall," said Failla. "I chose GW for its incredible academic programs, athletic opportunities and close-knit relationships within the athletics program. I am thrilled to be a part of the tennis team and to bring excitement and energy to the court each day!"
Failla joins a group of three other newcomers for the 2024-25 season. Along with Failla, GW's incoming class includes Patricia Ungure-Rogozoveca, Karen Verduzco and Vaida Matuseviciute. Follow GWsports.com for updates on the 2024-25 schedule and season information.
