Tennis Drops Close Match at Norfolk State

After falling behind early, the George Washington tennis team couldn't catch back up, falling to Norfolk State, 4-3, on Monday afternoon. GW drops to 7-8 overall with three matches remaining in the regular season.

The Spartans got out to a fast start, which included a sweep in all three doubles matches. GW's duo of Victoria Sasinka and Solange Skeene put up a good fight in the second flight, falling to Norfolk State's pairing by a score of 6-4.

The Revolutionaries made things interesting in singles play, winning matches in the second, fifth and sixth flights. Sasinka secured a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) win over her opponent in second singles, while Karen Verduzco picked up a 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fifth spot. First-year Devika Manu got on the board with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 win in the sixth flight, but the GW Revs couldn't secure the decisive fourth point to seal the match victory.

Manu improves to a 7-5 record in singles play as she continues to put together an impressive rookie campaign. Verduzco goes to 6-5 on the year, while Sasinka earned her fifth singles dub of the spring season.

GW returns to action this weekend, with matches on Friday and Saturday in Kinston, R.I. The Revolutionaries will battle New Haven on Friday at 12:00 p.m., before taking on host Rhode Island on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
