The George Washington tennis team opened the postseason with a strong showing in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, trouncing St. Bonaventure, 4-0, to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round. GW improves to 11-8 on the season and will face No. 4 Davidson at 4:30 p.m.
Â
GW started the match strong by securing wins in first and third doubles to take the opening point. The pairing of Karen Verduzco and Madison Lee continued their outstanding play this spring with a 6-3 win in the first flight, while first-years Alexandra Lindqvist and Devika Manu made the most of their first collegiate postseason match with a 6-1 victory. Lee and Verduzco now hold a 13-6 record on the season, while Manu and Lindqvist pick up their sixth doubles win this season.
Â
The Revolutionaries carried the momentum into singles, picking up three more quick points to put away the match. Lee finished 2-0 on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win in third singles, while Verduzco earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fifth flight. Manu rounded out GW's singles winners with a 6-1, 6-0 dub in the six spot.
Â
Though their singles matches were cut short, Solange Skeene, Victoria Sasinka and Lindqvist all held leads in their respective matches as GW did not trail in an individual match all day. Lindqvist was on match point when GW tallied its fourth point, and while it won't count towards official records, she won her fifth singles match shortly thereafter.
Â
GW now has a quick turnaround, facing Davidson tomorrow at 4:30 at the UTSA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Wildcats finished 10-7 on the season, including a 4-2 mark in A-10 matches. Davidson's lone conference losses came to Fordham and Richmond, two of the top three seeds in this year's bracket.
