Late Surge Lifts Tennis Past Rhode Island

Trailing 3-0 on the road, the George Washington tennis team used late singles wins by Alexandra Lindqvist, Karen Verduzco, Madison Lee and Devika Manu to secure a clutch 4-3 win in the team's penultimate match of the regular season.

Rhody jumped ahead early, taking two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 advantage. Solange Skeene and Victoria Sasinnka teamed up for GW's lone win, a 6-4 victory in the second flight. The duo now holds an 8-8 record on the year.

Rhode Island carried the momentum into singles play, picking up quick wins in the first and second flights. From there, the Revolutionaries flipped a switch, stringing together four-consecutive singles victories to secure the win.

Lindqvist got things started with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory in the fourth flight. Karen Verduzco was second in line with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 dub in No. 5 singles, while Lee pulled the match even with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win in the third flight. With the match in the balance, Devika Manu's 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win delivered GW the victory.

Lindqvist improves her team-best singles record to 10-7 on the year, while Manu moves to 9-5 this season. Lee sits at 9-8, while Verduzco sits at 8-5.

With just one match left in the regular season, GW prepares for a Senior Day match against Delaware State next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the match, Katya Balin will be honored as the program's lone senior at the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center (SETLC).
