WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team welcomes Coppin State to The Vern for the second time this season on Wednesday. First pitch between the Revolutionaries and Eagles is set for 2 p.m. with game coverage available on ESPN+.Â
PACKED HOMESTAND
GW is back home for seven games in a row at the GW Softball Field. Following Wednesday's matchup vs. Coppin State, GW will face off against the A-10 leading Saint Joseph's Hawks on Saturday (12 p.m. doubleheader) and Sunday (12 p.m.). Then on Tuesday, April 16, George Mason (12 p.m. doubleheader) visits The Vern to make up for the early April rainout, before GW rounds out the homestand vs. Georgetown (3 p.m.) on Wednesday, April 17.
LAST TIME AGAINST CSU
GW and Coppin State met once already this season on March 6, which resulted in a 8-5 Buff & Blue victory.Â
Alena Ramirez provided an early lead with a two-RBI double in the first inning and GW did not trail from that point on. Reese Torres added on in the third inning with a solo home run, but GW found themselves tied 3-3 in the fifth inning and needing more. The Revolutionaries found the spark they needed in the fifth on RBIs from Ramirez, Paige Hayward and R. Torres to take a late 6-3 lead. Allison Heffley and Maggie Greco added to that lead with an RBI in the sixth to make it 8-3, before the game went final at 8-5 a half-inning and two Eagles' runs later.
Sophia Torreso made the start and re-entered in the seventh, striking out four and walking two. Cece Smith relieved Torreso and was credited with the win. Smith punched out five and walked four but allowed just one run.Â
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Coppin State is 15-12 overall but has found its way so far in MEAC play at 10-2 in the conference. The Eagles have won eight of their last nine games, but they are 1-6 in non-conference games since facing the Revolutionaries.
Seryna Esparza leads Coppin State offensively with a 1.131 OPS, three home runs and 19 walks. Brooklyn Tapusoa paces the Eagles with 21 RBI and nine doubles, while Manaia Fonoti is tied for eighth nationally with a team-best five triples. Coppin State has thrown two pitchers this season: Vanessa Carrizosa and Emily Quintero. GW faced Carrizosa for all of game one, and on the season she has a 3.21 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and allows opponents to hit .270. Quintero has a 4.02 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and opponents average .283 off her.
GW is looking for its eighth-straight win over Coppin State on Wednesday and is 11-2 against the Eagles in the all-time series.
