WASHINGTON - A complete-game shutout for the Long Beach, Calif., native Rose Cano was the highlight on Wednesday afternoon as the George Washington University softball team took care of Coppin State, 2-0, to complete the season sweep of the Eagles. GW improves to 19-18 overall and 11-7 at home.Â
Cano was untouchable to start in the circle, throwing three perfect innings to begin the game before Coppin State got anything going offensively. Cano finished with a complete game, shutting out the Eagles on four hits with two strikeouts and just one walk. Cano earned her fourth win of the year, and her season ERA improved to 4.31 in her first shutout of 2024.
It took GW just three batters to get on the board in the top of the first. Alena Ramirez led off with a single up the middle, bringing up Maggie Greco, who pushed Ramirez to second on a sacrifice bunt, before Ramirez reached third on a passed ball. Allison Heffley was up next and drove in Ramirez on a sharply-hit double that hugged the left field line to give GW an early 1-0 edge.
The Revolutionaries added to their advantage in the third. Ramirez singled to start the inning and Greco followed with a double to place runners on second and third. Alexa Williams eventually drove in the lead runner on a single through the right side to extend GW's lead to 2-0.
The Eagles managed to get two runners aboard in both the fourth and sixth innings, but Cano stayed the course and worked herself out of both jams.Â
Ramirez and Paige Hayward each finished the day with two hits. GW held a 7-4 advantage in hits and left just four runners on base in the contest.
The Buff & Blue continue their seven-game homestand on Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday as Saint Joseph's makes the trip to The Vern for an A-10 matchup. First pitch on both Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m., and Saturday's games will be carried live on ESPN+.Â
