Heffley provides spark with walk-off in game one
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team split results vs. Saint Joseph's in a windy Saturday doubleheader on The Vern. The Revolutionaries won game one in comeback fashion, coming back from down two runs in the seventh inning to win, 4-3, before falling in a tight game two, 1-0. GW moves to 20-19 overall and 6-8 in the A-10.
GAME 1 (GW 4, SJU 3)
Allison Heffley put the exclamation on a three-run GW seventh as the Revolutionaries came back late to defeat the Hawks in game one, 4-3.
GW was down 3-0 in the sixth and looking for a way to get to the Hawks' starter Emily Siler. GW shaved one run off the lead as Maggie Greco reached base to start the inning on a walk before Heffley doubled to right, putting runners on second and third for Alexa Williams. Williams came through with a single, scoring Greco before Heffley was called out on a close play at the plate to make it 3-1 SJU heading into the seventh.
Down to their final out of game one, Greco came through with GW's first RBI to make it 3-2 on a double that scored Mandy Lauth and placed both her and pinch runner Sidney Torres in scoring position. With the game then riding on Heffley, she delivered a single up the middle, scoring both S. Torres and Greco without a play at the plate to give GW a 4-3, come-from-behind victory vs. the current A-10 leaders.
Rose Cano made the start for GW and collected her fifth win of the season. Cano allowed three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out one. The sophomore forced 11 flyouts and eight groundouts, and did well to avoid the Crimson & Grey barrels for most of the afternoon.
The heart of GW's lineup - Greco, Heffley and Williams - came through in big ways in game one, combining for six of GW's eight hits and driving in all four runs. Greco was 2-2 with two doubles, two runs, one RBI and one walk. Heffley was 2-4 with one double and two RBI, while Williams was 2-3 with one RBI.
GAME 2 (GW 0, SJU 1)
Game two of Saturday's doubleheader played just as tight as game one, but the fortune didn't favor the Revolutionaries as Saint Joseph's escaped with a 1-0 win.
Despite the loss, Sophia Torreso was excellent in the circle all game long. Saint Joseph's only run came unearned, as Torreso pitched a complete game and allowed just two hits and one walk. The first-year pitcher/utility collected 10 flyouts, 10 groundouts and one strikeout without allowing an extra-base hit, lowering her season ERA to 4.30.
The story of the game for GW on offense was 10 runners left on base. GW managed five hits and five walks, and was close to scoring on multiple occasions, but couldn't find the big hit.
Alena Ramirez and Cano each had two hits. Greco had GW's fifth hit and one of GW's five walks. Heffley, Williams, Ashley Corpuz and Lauth each also walked.
