Revolutionaries run rule Billikens after falling in extras
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team went 1-1 in Friday's doubleheader vs. Saint Louis. GW dropped a tight eight-inning battle in game one, 6-4, before returning with a vengeance in game two and besting Saint Louis in five innings, 11-1. GW moves to 18-14 and 5-3 in the A-10 on the season ahead of tomorrow's game three.
GAME 1 (GW 4, SLU 6)
The first game of the series between two of the early leaders in the A-10 needed extra innings to decide its winner, which went the way of SLU as they scored twice in the eighth to win 6-4.
Cece Smith earned the start for GDUB and made good work in her 5.2 innings. Smith gave up four hits and walked four, but just one of her four runs came earned and she struck out 11 batters, accounting for 65% of her outs on strikeouts. Smith was relieved by Rose Cano in the sixth, who struck out one with no walks in 2.1 innings, allowing two runs which were both unearned.
SLU's Cami Newbanks opened the scoring in the third with a two-RBI double, but GW answered immediately as Cadence Gilliland launched her first career home run to tie the game at 2-2, and Alexa Williams gave GW a 3-2 lead on an RBI single up the middle.
The Billikens tied the game in the fourth inning before going ahead 4-3 in the fifth inning. Cano, who had recently moved from second base to pitcher, then tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth, where the game stayed until extras.
GAME 2 (GW 11, SLU 1)
The Revolutionaries came out firing as they left nothing up to doubt in game two, taking down the Billikens by a final of 11-1.
The GW Revs scored in each of its at-bats in game two, with four runs in the first, three in the second and third and capping off the effort with one in the fourth. By the time Saint Louis got on the board, it was too little, too little as GW had amassed a 10-1 lead by the fourth inning.
Cano was exceptional in her third win of the season, limiting Saint Louis to just one run on seven hits. Cano struck out two and walked two, but kept the SLU bats quiet when it mattered most, stranding nine Billikens on base.
Alena Ramirez and Williams were each perfect offensively in game two. Ramirez was 3-3 with a walk, three runs and one RBI, while Williams was 1-1 and reached on an error and HBP, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Paige Hayward added three RBI and was 2-3 at the plate, while Maggie Greco scored three times with one RBI in a 1-3 performance.
