DAYTON, Ohio - A four-run Flyers' third inning put GW behind the eight-ball in the series finale on Sunday, but Revolutionaries rose to the challenge and came back to beat Dayton, 7-4, sparked by a five-run fourth inning featuring a Reese Torres grand slam. GW improves to 17-13 overall and 4-2 in the A-10, having won both its league series, 2-1.Â
Rose Cano was called upon to take the circle for GW in game three, facing off against Dayton's Haven Dwyer. Cano and Dwyer each kept clean performances going through the first two innings, but the Flyers finally got to Cano in the third after a combined 5.2 straight scoreless innings between game two and the finale.
Dayton threw four runs on the board in the third inning on dueling two-RBI doubles, but the GW Revs stayed the course and finally broke Dwyer in the fourth. Mandy Lauth drove in Ashley Corpuz on a single before Cano walked to load the bases for R. Torres, who made the most of the opportunity, hitting a grand slam to erase the Flyers' lead and put GW up 5-4. R. Torres is now tied for the team lead in home runs (3) and has done so in just 31 at bats.
GW added insurance to its lead in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Maggie Greco doubled GW's lead reaching via an error, before Allison Heffley made it 7-4 on a single to right field - the final scoring play of the afternoon and series.
Cano went the distance and was only touched in the four-run third inning. Dayton had 10 hits, but Cano struck out four and walked just one in her second consecutive win. Seven different GW Revs had hits, but no one for GW had a multi-hit day. R. Torres had a game-high four RBI, while Lauth and Cano each scored twice.Â
The Revolutionaries take a break from midweek games but return to the GW Softball Field on Friday (doubleheader) and Saturday for a three-game A-10 series vs. Saint Louis. Friday's action will be carried on ESPN+, and first pitch is set for 12 p.m. on both days.Â
