Lacrosse Caps Non-conference Slate with 14-11 Win at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The George Washington lacrosse team concluded its non-conference slate with a thrilling 14-11 win over Youngstown State on Wednesday afternoon. Emma Nowakowski paced GW with a team-high four goals to secure the squad's third win of the year.
The first quarter proved to be the only frame that GW would be outscored on the day, falling behind 5-2 after the first 15 minutes. GW recorded its first goal of the game at the 9:54 mark, an unassisted score from Kiki Rotay. After falling behind 2-1, the Buff & Blue evened the score via a goal from Bailey Aaron with 7:09 left. In the final seven minutes, the Penguins tallied three unanswered goals to go ahead 5-2.
GW would quickly storm back in the second quarter, ripping off three-straight goals of its own to tie the game back at five apiece. Scoring during the run, which spanned the first 4:24 of the quarter, were Desiree Kleberg, Emma Nowakowski and Everly Kessler.
After both teams traded goals for the next 10 minutes, the score was once again knotted, this time at eight apiece. With 1:34 left in the first half, Nowakowski took a pass from Chamberlaine Bell and ripped a behind the back shot into the top-left corner of the goal. The highlight play was Nowakowski's second goal of the day and gave the Revolutionaries a 9-8 lead at the break.
Out of halftime, GW added on to the advantage with two more goals from the Emma's. Nowakowski got her third of the day at the 13:55 mark, while Emma McLaughlin scored her first and only goal of the contest with 9:02 left in the third to make the lead 11-8. The Penguins wouldn't go away quietly, going on another 3-0 run to tie the game once again. The run spanned across 16 minutes of game time between the third and fourth quarters.
GW would eventually tally the go-ahead goal with 3:45 left in the game. The score was GW's first in 20 minutes of action. The Revolutionaries didn't look back, pouring on two more goals in the final two minutes of the game to secure the 14-11 victory. Along with Nowakowski's four goals, GW also got offensive production from Desiree Kleberg, who notched three goals and two assists. Aaron finished with two goals for the Buff & Blue, while Kessler finished with one goal and one assist. Rotay, McLaughlin, Shea Baggett and Grace Curry each added one goal apiece as well. In net, Mia Caro tallied 11 saves for the Buff & Blue in 60 minutes of action.
