Lacrosse Drops OT Heartbreaker to Duquesne

WASHINGTON – The George Washington lacrosse team fell in overtime to Duquesne on Saturday afternoon, 15-14. The Revolutionaries mounted a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter to send the game to an extra period but were unable to seal the win in OT.
GW started the contest slow, giving up two goals in the first two minutes of action. Emma Nowakowski captured the first goal of the game for the Buff & Blue at the 12:53 mark in the first quarter, then Desiree Kleberg knotted the score at two apiece with a goal at the 11:41 mark in the opening period. Duquesne proceeded to use a 3-0 run over the next nine minutes of game action to take a 5-2 advantage. Everly Kessler ended the run with a goal at the 2:04 mark in the quarter, but the Dukes got it right back, tallying another score with three seconds remaining to lead 6-3 after one.
The second period would be won by GW, who outscored the Dukes 3-2 in the frame. Kiki Rotay, Grace Curry and Kleberg would each register a goal for the Revolutionaries in the quarter. Rotay's goal came at the 14:12 mark, Curry's score was at the 11:49 mark and Kleberg's second goal was registered with 7:39 remaining. Neither team registered any offense the final seven minutes of the frame, giving Duquesne an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, Duquesne registered two quick goals to build a 10-6 advantage. The four-goal lead would be the biggest either team would hold the entire game. GW outscored the Dukes 3-2 in the final 12 minutes of the quarter, getting goals from Kessler, Rotay and Nowakowski to make the score 12-9 heading to the fourth.
After GW fell behind 13-9 early in the final period, the Revolutionaries ripped off five straight goals over an eight-minute span to take a 14-13 lead. Curry recorded the goal that put GW on top, the team's first lead of the entire game, with just 3:44 left in regulation. Looking to close out the game, GW turned the ball over with less than 90 seconds remaining, giving the ball back to Duquesne for one final opportunity. The Dukes would take advantage of the GW miscue, drawing a foul with four second remaining and scoring on a free-position shot with one second left on the clock. The Duquesne goal was scored by Faith Conaty and tied the game at 14 apiece, sending the contest to overtime.
Duquesne gained first possession of the ball in the overtime period but quickly turned it over to GW. During the Buff & Blue clear attempt, GW turned the ball back over to the Dukes, creating a fastbreak opportunity.
