Mott’s Monster Day Leads Women’s Basketball Past Hampton

MIAMI, Fla – Behind a monster effort of 16 points and 14 rebounds from graduate student Paige Mott, the George Washington women's basketball team topped Hampton, 72-69, on the final day of the FIU Christmas Classic. For her efforts, Mott was named to the All-Tournament Team following the contest.
Neither team got out to a quick start offensively, scoring a combined 10 points through the first six minutes of the game. GW's first four baskets all came from different players, and all five starters tallied at least two points through the first eight minutes of the game. After both teams picked up the offensive pace towards the end of the stanza, the quarter was capped off by first-year Kyraha Parnell who banked in a three-pointer from the left wing to put GW up 18-11; the third of three triples she connected on during the team's trip to Florida and the first three of her career.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with GW leading by as many as nine, and Hampton cutting the deficit down to four on multiple occasions. The teams eventually settled on a 30-25 tally heading into the break, with GW holding the slim advantage.
After Hampton used a 10-5 run to knot the game at 35 early in the third, GW went through a spell without a field goal made for over six minutes. Despite the dry stretch, the offense still managed to go on an 8-0 run of its own, scoring all nine points at the free throw line. This stretched the GW lead back to 43-35, propelling the Buff & Blue to a 50-40 advantage heading to the fourth.
In the final quarter, GW relied on Mott and clutch free throw shooting to secure the win. Hampton made multiple runs and tied the game late, but Mott's 8-for-8 performance from the line and GW's combined mark of 24-for-28 proved to be just enough in the 72-69 victory.
Mott's performance was her first double-double with the Buff & Blue and the highest scoring output she's turned in since joining the program. Fellow graduate student Mariona Planes Fortuny recorded a team-high 18 points in the contest to go along with seven rebounds. Senior Maxine Engel added nine points, while grad Makayla Andrews and first-year Gabby Reynolds each added eight points.
The Revolutionaries will return to action on Dec. 29, facing Atlantic 10 foe La Salle at 2:00 p.m. in Philly. Coverage of the contest will be available on ESPN+.
