WASHINGTON – Under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Caroline McCombs, the George Washington women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season against Delaware at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The matchup will be aired live on ESPN+ with Byron Kerr and GW basketball alumna Camila Tapias on the call.
GETTING TO KNOW THE NEWCOMERS
In total, GW welcomes nine new players into the fold this season which includes five transfer students and four first-years. The transfers are comprised of three D1 graduates and two juniors who make their way to Foggy Bottom from non-Division I universities. The graduate group is made up of Paige Mott (Northwestern), Mariona Planes Fortuny (Bryant) and Makayla Andrews (Lafayette). All three arrive at GW with very successful collegiate careers under their belts and will provide veteran leadership to GW's talented group of young players. The two undergraduate transfers include Maeva Fotsa (South Georgia Tech) and Filipa Calisto (New Mexico Junior College), both of which look to make an immediate impact during their first season in Division I basketball.
GW's first-year class is headlined by 2023-24 Michigan Miss Basketball Award winner Gabby Reynolds who joins the Revolutionaries after a successful prep career at West Ottawa High School. The remaining first-year class includes Miriam Diala (Heidelberg, Germany), Kyraha Parnell (Galax, Va.) and Morgan Matthews (Lawrenceville, NJ).
WELCOMING BACK THE RETURNERS
GW's squad is also comprised of five returning players from last year's team. Included in the returning class are senior Maxine Engel, juniors Caia Loving and Natalia Sierra-Vargas, as well as sophomores Sara Lewis and Kamari Sims. Engel is GW's lone true senior and is the first student-athlete at GW to spend all four years of her collegiate career under McCombs. Sims is GW's lead returning scorer after averaging 4.5 ppg last year. The group has a combined 140 games played for the Buff & Blue with 28 starts.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HENS
Delaware enters the opening week of the season after being selected sixth in the CAA's Preseason Poll announced in mid-October. Led by third-year Head coach Sarah Jenkins, the Blue Hens saw graduate forward Chloe Wilson earn the program's lone honor in the CAA Preseason All-Conference list. Wilson, a native of Freeport, N.Y., averaged 11.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game during her senior year in 2023-24. Last season was Wilson's first with the Blue Hens after spending the first three years of her collegiate career with Fairleigh Dickinson. Along with Wilson, teammates Ande'a Cherisier and Tara Cousins were named preseason all-conference honorable mentions. Cherisier averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during her rookie season last year, while Cousins notched 10.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists a season ago.
The Blue Hens finished the 2023-24 season 11-20 overall and 7-11 in conference play. They went 1-1 against Atlantic 10 opponents last year, finding a win against Duquesne but falling victim to VCU. In the all-time series, GW holds a 5-1 lead against the Blue Hens. The last meeting between the programs came in 2020, with the Buff & Blue emerging victorious by a score of 61-56. GW has won four-straight against Delaware dating back to 1984. The first meeting between the two schools was held in 1977, with GW tallying a slim victory on that day, 62-61.
