RICHMOND, Va. - GW men's basketball staked itself to a 12-point, first-half lead at first-place Richmond on Wednesday, but saw the host Spiders catch fire and roar back to pull out an 82-74 victory at the Robins Center. UR remains tied atop the A-10 standings at a perfect 6-0, along with nationally-ranked Dayton, and also improved to 10-0 on its home floor.
The Buff & Blue seemingly had the Spiders on the ropes, limiting the hosts to just 8-of-27 shooting and 19 points in the first 17 minutes of the game. GW took advantage by going on an extended 18-5 run over eight minutes to push its lead to its largest, 31-19, with 3:24 remaining on a 3-pointer from Jacoi Hutchinson.
But the Buff & Blue were unable to maintain their rhythm as Richmond's Jordan King got going, scoring 11 points in a 14-3 half-ending run that was punctuated by a 3-pointer at the buzzer to slice GW's lead to 34-33.
Richmond stayed hot after halftime with 10 of the first 12 to take command of the contest. King scored five more in the run and finished with 32 points on a highly efficient 11-of-19 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep. The Spiders hit eight triples in the second half and shot 12-of-23 from beyond the arc, continuing a trend of hot 3-point shooting for opponents in GW's setbacks this season.
Trailing by as many as 13, GW didn't go down without a fight, roaring back to within four in the final minute after a three-point play from Darren Buchanan Jr. GW had the ball and an open look from Garrett Johnson, but it rimmed out with 35 seconds left, snuffing out the comeback bid.
Johnson led five Revolutionaries in double figures with 17 points on the night. James Bishop IV overcame a second-straight tough shooting day (4-of-18) to score 15 points, while Hutchinson set a new career-high with 13 points on a 5-of-6 day from the floor.
Buchanan added 13 and Maximus Edwards provided 11 points, while Babatunde Akingbola grabbed 14 rebounds as GW outrebounded Richmond, 46-35, and scored 17 points on 14 offensive rebounds.
After back-to-back games away from home, GW will return to the Smith Center for a 6 p.m. clash with La Salle on Saturday night. The first 250 GW students will receive a GW canvas tote bag and the game will be presented by Metro.
