THANKS FOR THE CHARITY
GW has paraded to the free throw line with regularity this season, averaging 23.0 free throw attempts per contest. The Buff & Blue have attempted at least 20 free throws 12 times this year, including seven-straight games. GW is 79th nationally on the year, shooting 73.9% at the stripe. GW has averaged 17.0 makes per game, the most in the league and 29th nationally.
Conversely, GW has committed just 14.1 fouls per game, third-best in the A-10 and the 20th-fewest in the nation. Per KenPom, GW has the fifth-best opponent free throw rate in the NCAA. GW has made 289 free throws this year compared to just 241 total attempts for its opponents.
CAPUTO QUICK TO 30 WINS
Head Coach Chris Caputo earned his 30th win as bench boss of the GW Revs on Monday, improving to 30-19 in his first 49 games. Caputo is the sixth-fastest coach in program history to 30 wins, and the fastest to do so since Mike Jarvis (30-18) in 1990-91.
Among last year's crop of six new coaches in the A-10, Caputo ranks second in win percentage (Keith Urgo, Fordham, .600), but is the only coach to have guided his team to a .500 or better record in both years thus far.
A LOOK AT THE MINUTEMEN
UMass enters Saturday at 2-3 in league play following consecutive road losses at Rhode Island (89-77) and Loyola Chicago (79-78). The Minutemen rank second in the A-10 in scoring at 81.5 ppg, just behind GW. They also get to the free throw line with similar frequency to the Buff & Blue, leading the loop with 24.5 attempts per game and ranking second with 16.8 makes per contest.
UMass is also first in the league with 14.1 offensive rebounds per game and tops in the circuit in turnover margin at +3.7. Conversely, UMass is the worst 3-point shooting team in the league at 31.6% and commits the second-most fouls in the A-10.
Saint Francis (PA) transfer Josh Cohen is UMass' top threat with 18.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg on a highly efficient 57.3% FG%. He is second in the league in FG%, second in scoring and eighth in rebounding. Matt Cross, who played under Coach Caputo at Miami, pours in 15.9 ppg and 8.3 rpg, ranking 10th and second in the A-10, respectively. UConn transfer Rahsool Diggins gives the Minutemen a trio of double-digit scorers with 11.6 ppg.
