Men’s Basketball Leads Start-to-Finish in 75-62 Win

WASHINGTON - Anybody expecting to see more frenzied action when GW and George Mason met on Monday would've been right to think a thriller was in order. After all, through three A-10 games, GW had seen 37 ties and 59 lead changes, plus two overtime contests in its 2-1 start to conference play. There was also the fact that 91% of the minutes played after halftime since conference play began were played within a single possession. So when rivals met on MLK Day, another tight one was a reasonable guess.
George Washington would flip the script though, leading wire-to-wire in a 13-point victory, the team's biggest margin against a Division I opponent since December 9 for the 14-3 Revolutionaries, who are also now 3-1 in conference play.
A couple of familiar faces led the way for the GW Revs, with D.C. product Darren Buchanan Jr., leading all scorers with 21 points, missing only four shots in a 9-of-13 performance (2-2 3pt FG, 1-1 FT). Then there was leading man James Bishop IV steadily stalking GW's all-time scoring record, casually putting up another 20-point effort on his 11 shots from the floor.
GDUB shot out of the locker room quickly, taking an 18-point lead in the later stages of the first half, before going on to lead 37-24 at the break. Playing with the lead in the second half, the home team was able to thwart off several Mason rallies in the second, playing even with their guests in the final 20 minutes.
Babatunde Akingbola locked down the middle for GW in his team's defensive effort that yielded just a .328 field goal percentage against. The former SEC big man grabbed 11 boards to lead a 40-35 rebounding advantage, while swatting four Patriots' shots.
After playing two games in the last three days, this week provides a period of needed rest for George Washington. The team plays next in Massachusetts Saturday at noon on ESPN+.
Monday's game was presented by the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences as part of their bicentennial celebration.
