Whitney Moran leads all GW scorers with hat trick
WASHINGTON – GW lacrosse began its 2023 campaign on Saturday with a 19-10 loss to the UMBC Retrievers at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field.
GW and UMBC traded goals to begin the opening quarter, with Whitney Moran scoring two goals for GW in her first game in Buff & Blue.
In the second quarter, three different goal scorers put GW within one at 6-5 before the Retrievers struck four times to head into halftime up, 10-5. Â
GW found the back of the net three times in the third quarter, but four more goals from UMBC padded the visitor's lead, putting GW in a 14-8 hole after three.
A two-goal fourth quarter for the Buff & Blue wouldn't be enough to stop an active UMBC offense, with GW dropping its opener 19-10.
NOTEWORTHY:
- GW had six different goal scorers and three with multi-goal outings.
- A graduate transfer from LIU, Moran scored a team-high three goals in her GW debut.
- Graduate transfer Kerry McKeever tallied two goals in her first game for GW.
- Emily Mowbray continued to be an offensive option for GW in her sophomore season, finding the back of the net twice on Saturday.
- Sophomore Everly Kessler scored her first career goal.
- Mia Caro made the start, playing the full 60 minutes in net for the Buff & Blue and made seven saves.
