WASHINGTON - After seeing their counterparts in the women's program defeat the visiting Eagles on Saturday afternoon, men's basketball followed suit with a 76-45 victory of its own. The game was all but over at halftime as the George Washington defense held Coppin State to just 17 points in the opening 20 minutes, courtesy of a .211 field goal percentage allowed. For the game, GW held their guests to a lowly .260 mark.
The GW Revs first-half dominance also included a 20-4 advantage in points in the paint as despite a slow start from the floor against a 3-2 Eagles' zone, the home team adjusted to get all of its first-half points either in the paint, from three (4-of-14), or at the line (4-of-4).
Despite Coppin making it similarly slow to open the second, closing to within 43-29 with just over 13 minutes to play, a Benny Schröder three-point play pushed the lead back near 20 and GW didn't look back.
On a night when James Bishop IV was looking to play distributor, the All A-10 performer finished with a game-high six assists, letting Darren Buchanan Jr. (14 points, 6-of-8 FG), Trey Autry (career-high tying 13 points), and Maximus Edwards (11 points) pace the team. In all, ten found the scoring column as the team registered 20 assists on its 28 made field goals.
If it wasn't decided previously, it officially was when Zamoku Weluche-Ume buried his first career field goal, a 3-pointer in front of his bench, delighting his teammates and running the GW lead to 59-31 at the under-eight timeout. Weluche-Ume canned another three minutes later, making him a perfect 2-for-2 from deep on the night as one of three Revolutionaries to connect on a pair of triples; all first-years (Autry, Jacoi Hutchinson).
A game after setting an all-time single game record with 11 blocks on Tuesday vs. Navy, Babatunde Akingbola swatted five more Saturday.
The 31-point margin of victory marked the game's largest lead in a contest that GW never trailed. Up next is a Tuesday date with Bowie State, live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m.
