WASHINGTON - With an opportunity to keep its home record perfect and get some valuable court time for its young and growing core, the GW Revs did exactly that on Tuesday night against Division II Bowie State in a 88-73 triumph. The game, however, was not nearly as close as the final score suggests, as George Washington held a 34-point lead with 9:44 to play before both teams fully emptied the benches.
The Bulldogs made the short drive west on Route 50 to come to Downtown D.C., and were met by an exemplary shooting performance in the first half by GW. The Revolutionaries were 60/45/80 in the opening half, connecting on 60.9% of their field goal tries, including 45.5% from deep, while sinking 13-of-18 free throws (.813).
As importantly, the young Revolutionaries had a chance to shine. Back in the starting lineup, true freshman Trey Autry had seven first-half points, while first-year Garrett Johnson led all scorers at the break with 10. Johnson went on to tie fellow first-year Darren Buchanan Jr. for team-high scoring honors with 13. Buchanan, the redshirt freshman from D.C. by way of Virginia Tech, extended his team-leading number of games in double figures this season to 10.
True freshman Jacoi Hutchinson saw 12:18 of court time in the first stanza to play a role in the rout, making his all-around presence felt and finishing with a career-high 12 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes of action, while classmate Zamoku Weluche-Ume hit a pair of threes for the second-straight game.
In a rare feat, not to be outdone by his younger teammates, Babatunde Akingbola scored in double figures for the first time in his career, an unusual note after already having a game with double-figure blocks. In all, 10 players put their name in the GW scoring column.
Bowie State, to its credit, landed an early punch and held a six-point lead in the opening minutes, only to see the scorching shooting show by GDUB quickly erase that gap.
GW will now take a break for finals before returning to action on Thursday, December 21 for a matinee vs. Alcorn State, live on ESPN+ at 2 p.m. in the penultimate non-conference game of the season.
