WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball aims for its fourth-straight victory as it continues its six-game homestand with a Thursday matinee vs. Alcorn State. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
IMPACTFUL FIRST-YEARS
One of the hallmarks under Coach Caputo has been freshmen and redshirt freshmen getting opportunities to immediately play. Last season, Maximus Edwards was the A-10 Rookie of the Year and led league rookies in minutes played and rebounding while finishing second in scoring.
This season, Darren Buchanan Jr. and Garrett Johnson are the top two rookie scorers in the A-10, having played the first- and second-most minutes, and ranking among the top-three in rebounding. Notably, Jacoi Hutchinson (6th MPG, 4th APG) and Trey Autry (9th MPG, 5th PPG) are both in the top-10 among freshmen as well.
Through 11 games, the GW Revs have received 49.6% of their offense from freshmen and redshirt freshmen, and rookies have played more than half (1144/2275) of the team's minutes. GW has received 23 double-digit performances from four different freshmen this season - Buchanan (10), Johnson (8), Autry (3) and Hutchinson (2) - with at least two rookies in the starting lineup of each of the first 11 games.
DC'S OWN THRIVING BACK HOME
Darren Buchanan Jr. has led the charge for the GW rookies with a team-leading 10 double-digit performances. Buchanan has scored at least nine points in every game of his college career and has scored at least 13 points with four or more rebounds in six-straight games.
Nationally, Buchanan is one of just two first-years averaging at least 13.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg, joining Penn's Tyler Perkins. Buchanan is three made field goals shy of qualifying for the national leaderboard, and would be the only player in the A-10 shooting over 60% to qualify, sitting at 61.2% entering Thursday.
AUTRY ON THE ASCENT
Fellow first-year Trey Autry has come into his own over the last four games, averaging 10.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg during the span. Autry has led the Revolutionaries in rebounding each of the last two games, pulling down eight vs. Coppin State and seven last week against Bowie State in his return to the starting lineup.
The Jamesville, N.Y., native has begun to turn around his 3-point shooting, connecting on 8-of-18 (44.4%) in the last four games after starting his career 8-of-38 (21.0%) in the first seven games.
A LOOK AT THE BRAVES
Alcorn State came into the 2023-24 campaign fresh off back-to-back SWAC regular season championships and a pair of trips to the NIT. The Braves have gone 29-7 in league play the last two years, but have conversely gone 4-20 in non-league games.
This year, Alcorn is 1-11 and has lost 10-consecutive games since its lone win over non-Division I Xavier (LA). The Braves are 350th in the country (out of 351 teams) in scoring defense, having allowed 88.4 ppg.
Jeremiah Kendall is the team's primary offensive threat, averaging a team-high 16.1Â ppg and 6.7 rpg. Jeremiah Gambrell is seventh in the country in 3-point percentage at 48.9%, making 2.6 threes per game, including a 5-for-6 showing on Sunday vs. Northern Iowa.
