WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball, having won each of its six home games, looks for a seventh on Tuesday night when it hosts Division II Bowie State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
GW received 44 of its 76 points on Saturday from first-years, continuing an early-season trend of production from rookies. Through 10 games, the Revolutionaries have received 48% of its offense from freshmen and redshirt freshmen.
Darren Buchanan Jr. has led the charge, leading the team with nine games of 10+ points and having scored at least nine points in every game. He and Garrett Johnson (twice) have combined for three A-10 Rookie of the Week awards in the season's first five weeks.
GW has now received 20 double-digit performances from four different freshmen this season in Buchanan (nine), Johnson (seven), Trey Autry (three) and Jacoi Hutchinson (one).
WINNING WITH DEFENSE
GW is 18th nationally in effective field goal percentage defense at 44.0% and 17th in the NCAA in overall field goal defense at 37.9%. Coppin State was the third opponent this season to shoot less than 35% against the Buff & Blue, equaling last year's total. The Buff & Blue are a perfect 5-0 when holding opponents below 40% this season and 12-0 in two years under Coach Caputo.
The Buff & Blue have limited six of their opponents to less than 30% from deep, including Coppin State, which was just 2-of-22 from deep on Saturday. GW continues to lead the A-10 in 3-point defense at 28.6%, 33rd in the NCAA.
A LOOK AT THE BULLDOGS
Bowie State, out of Division II, is 4-5 on the season following an 82-67 loss at Claflin on Saturday. The Bulldogs are taking on a Division I opponent for the first time since falling at Howard (88-67) and Marquette (98-40) in November of 2021.
Kyree Freeman-Davis leads Bowie State in scoring at 12.8 ppg and is coming off a season-best 22 points on Saturday vs. Claflin. Caleb Johnson (12.7 ppg) and Mark Bradshaw (11.8) both also average double figures for the Bulldogs.
Bowie State is coached by Darrell Brooks, who was an assistant at GW for eight years from 2001-09. During his time in Foggy Bottom, Brooks was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams and two A-10 Tournament championships.
