WASHINGTON - A midday contest between GW and Duquesne ensued at the Charles E. Smith Center Saturday, less than 16 hours after the Revolutionaries battled back to take a five-set affair from the Dukes last night.
In the closing stages of the regular season as teams vie for seeding in the six-team Atlantic 10 Championship, Friday's win gave GW a boost in the standings to move to a fourth-place tie with Davidson at 4-4. Unfortunately Saturday, Duquesne returned the favor, as the Dukes and GW Revs split the weekend and will move ahead into next weekend with matching 4-5 conference marks, after the Pittsburghers won 25-17, 25-23, 25-14.
Set one saw the Dukes hitting hard and smacking a scorching .406 percentage with 15 kills en route to a 25-17 win. GW fought after falling behind 13-7, and closed to within 17-15 on the strength of an Amina Robinson ace — one of three GDUB aces in the set - but the hot-hitting visitors were too much to overcome in a set they never trailed, while the hosts hit .111.
The second set featured improved hitting from GW, as the home team nearly doubled its percentage to .216, but Duquesne stayed just a tick ahead throughout. After George Washington took its first lead of the day at 2-1, neither squad was able to separate. There wasn't a lead larger than four, and the set saw ties at 17, 18, 21 before the Dukes eked out a 25-23 win.
Matters didn't improve in the third with Duquesne running away with a 25-14 set win to sweep the match, including closing on a 9-2 run, outhitting GW .323 - .140 in the process.
Leaders on the day for George Washington included Salem Yohannes with nine kills, Maeve Loughran with 26 assists and Robinson with 17 digs.
The road ahead for GW takes the club to Fordham next weekend, who sit right in the mix of positioning battle as well. With two home weekends remaining on the schedule, against top-two teams Dayton and VCU, the Revolutionaries will look to put a pair of crucial wins in the bank in the Bronx, starting Friday night at 6 p.m.
