Volleyball’s Furious Comeback Falls Short at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – The George Washington volleyball team dropped a five-set duel with Fordham on Friday night. After falling behind 2-0, GW mounted a furious comeback but was unable to seal the victory in the decisive fifth set.
BY THE NUMBERS
Junior Salem Yohannes led the GW attack with a career-high 26 kills. Yohannes also dished out four assists and finished with a .350 hitting percentage for the Buff & Blue. Senior Liv Womble and junior Brittany Myers registered 15 kills each. Myers, a native of Alexandria, Va., finished with a hitting percentage of .310. Sophomore Maeve Loughran also enjoyed a career day, dishing out 55 assists to set a new career mark. Loughran broke her previous career-high of 51 which was set last weekend against Duquesne. In total, GW recorded 68 kills, 65 assists and finished with a .249 team hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fordham opened the match with a wire-to-wire victory, never trailing in the first frame. GW was able to tie the score on multiple occasions, but never captured a lead of their own. Fordham used an 8-3 run to close out the set, winning by a score of 25-19.
In set two, Fordham put together a comeback to steal the frame from GW. After back and forth play through the early stages, the Buff & Blue managed to build a 15-10 lead midway through the set. Not backing down, Fordham put together a 12-7 run to tie the score at 22 apiece. Using clutch plays down the stretch, the Rams secured the last three points to win the set 25-22.
Set three was a tight battle that proved GW wouldn't go away without a fight. After falling behind 24-21 in the closing stages, GW tallied four straight points to retake a 25-24 lead. The short burst was led by Loughran who tallied two service aces and two assists for the Revolutionaries. GW would ultimately go on to win the set, 29-27.
In set four, GW and Fordham played to a 9-9 tie early on. The Revolutionaries proceeded to use an 14-6 run, opening a 23-15 lead. GW would ultimately win the set 25-19, pushing the match to a decisive fifth frame. Fordham settled in during the fifth set, jumping to an 8-3 lead early and cruising to a 15-9 victory to seal the win.
