Volleyball Completes Saturday Sweep of LIU, NJIT

Reifert notches first and second career wins as Head Coach
LEWISBURG, Pa. – GW volleyball picked up a pair of wins to finish 2-1 at this weekend's Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
Head Coach Katie Reifert's first win at the helm came in a five-set thriller over LIU on Saturday morning, 26-28, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 16-14. With a mere 30 minutes separating each match, GW turned its attention to NJIT, sweeping the Highlanders, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15.

GAME 1Â
In game one, Brittany Myers and Liv Womble put together career-high days with 20 kills apiece. Myers, a transfer from Rhode Island, hit for .295 and added six digs to match her career-best for the second time this season. Womble added 10 digs to her 20-kill outing for the first double-double of her career. Elizabeth Drelling continued to be an offensive machine for GW, totaling 19 kills for her third double-figure match of 2022. With the 19 kills, Drelling has already set a career-high in a single season with 67 kills, surpassing her previous mark by six kills (61).
Amina Robinson got the nod as GW's designated libero, racking up a career-high 24 digs to lead GW's backline. Grace Allread also had a career day, notching 33 assists and 18 digs, assisting a GW offense that put down 71 kills to hit for .205. First-year Penelope Hiepler added a career-best 15 digs and Bella Bowman tallied 12.
At the net, Tierra Porter led the team with eight blocks to tie her season-high.
GAME 2
Womble paced GW's offense, recording 13 kills behind a dominating .478 hitting percentage. Myers stayed active on GW's outside slot, registering 10 kills to go along with three blocks. Porter chipped in seven kills and eight blocks.
Robinson continued at libero for GW, scooping up 13 digs. Allread tallied 20 assists and Dilara Elmacioglu added 16. It was GW's most efficient match of the season, finishing with a .247 hitting percentage and 41 kills. It was GW's first 3-0 sweep since topping Rhode Island on November 16, 2019.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
GAME 1Â
13 ties highlighted set one, with the opening frame going in favor of the Sharks despite a match-high, 18-kill effort by GW. Â
GW jumped out to a 14-7 advantage in set two powered by 11 early kills from the Buff & Blue offense that swung for a match-high .531 behind 18 kills and one error. After LIU won the opening point, GW never surrendered a lead, cruising to a dominant 25-14 set two victory to level the match at one set apiece.
LIU started set three with a 6-0 scoring run before it was stopped by a kill from Drelling. The Sharks maintained a lead until GW evened set three at 17 before LIU pulled away for good, forcing GW into a must-win situation heading into the fourth set.
GW forced a fifth set behind a 14-kill outing in the fourth frame. The Buff & Blue stretched an 11-5 advantage, leading by as many as eight to move to a 15-point deciding set.
GW jumped ahead to a 6-3 lead, tallying an impressive 12 kills on 15 points to take home its first win of the Katie Reifert era.
GAME 2Â
GW's offense continued its momentum from game one, hammering 17 kills in the first set vs. NJIT. Myers helped GW with four kills as part of a six-point scoring run to pull away for good at 15-9.
GW moved to 5-1 in the second set courtesy of three NJIT errors and a pair of kills from Porter and Womble. GW maintained its lead until NJIT evened the set at 14, which was quickly followed by a 4-0 run by the Highlanders, putting them ahead 21-19. After a GW timeout, four Highlander errors and a service ace from Allread helped GW to a 2-0 set advantage.
To complete the sweep, GW out-hit NJIT .455 to .074 in the third set, powered by 13 kills on 22 attempts with just three errors. GW took an 11-5 lead early and created even more separation at 17-9 before finishing off the Highlanders with a 25-15 set victory.Â

GW returns to the Smith Center next week with two matches on Friday vs. Binghamton (noon) and Rider (6 p.m.). The Buff & Blue will meet Georgetown on Saturday at 1 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
