Veterans helped program clinch second straight A-10 regular season title
GW softball celebrated a memorable Senior Weekend on the Mount Vernon Campus, clinching its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title with a series victory over Saint Louis.
The Buff and Blue honored Sierra Lange, Alessandra Ponce, Megan Osterhaus, Hannah Eslick, Olivia Vinyard and Maddy Dwyer as they played their final home games, and that distinguished group helped lead the way vs. the Billikens.
The most decorated pitcher in program history, Lange earned wins in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader sweep and also finished the weekend with six hits, three runs scored and two steals, all team highs. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, improved to 22-7 on the season and boosted her batting average to .361 with the three multi-hit performances.
Ponce cracked her 55th career double in Saturday's opener to become the program's all-time leader, and the graduate student from Henderson, Nev., ended the series slashing .556/.600/.667 with three RBIs.
Eslick had three hits in Saturday's second game and helped set up the Buff and Blue's epic clinching moment. The graduate student from Glen Burnie, Md., singled in the bottom of the seventh and came around to score on Alexa Williams' walk-off three-run home run that secured a 6-3 victory and the regular season crown.
In Sunday's finale, all six honorees were in the starting lineup, with Osterhaus earning her first start of the season in the circle, before they were honored in a postgame ceremony for their contributions, on and off the field.
The weekend marked a fitting final act at The Vern for a group that has helped the program secure 154 wins and a .666 winning percentage over the past five seasons on the way to new heights.
After a final regular season series at UMass, those veterans will lead the program's latest postseason push at the A-10 Championship, hosted by George Mason on May 11-14, looking to earn a repeat title and book a return to the NCAA Tournament.
