Buff & Blue honored six student-athletes Sunday
WASHINGTONÂ - All six of GW softball's Senior Weekend honorees were in the starting lineup for Sunday's finale vs. Saint Louis on the Mount Vernon Campus.
A day after the Buff and Blue clinched their second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title with a doubleheader sweep, the Billikens took the final game of the series, 6-1.
In a festive postgame ceremony in spite of the rainy weather, GW celebrated a group who has led the program to new heights over the past five seasons with Sierra Lange, Alessandra Ponce, Megan Osterhaus, Hannah Eslick, Olivia Vinyard and Maddy Dwyer honored.
In the game, the Billikens pushed across a pair of runs in the third inning to go in front, and after the Buff and Blue halved their deficit with an RBI single from Ponce scoring Lange in the sixth, the visitors put the game out of reach with a four-run top of the seventh.
In her first start of the season, Osterhaus pitched into the third inning before being relieved by Dwyer. Fittingly, Lange, the program's all-time leader in nearly every pitching category, entered with two outs in the seventh to face one final batter in the last home contest of her decorated career.
Lange led the offense on Sunday, collecting a pair of hits and stealing her team-leading 19th base of the season. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, hit .643 (9-for-14) over five games on the week to raise her season average to .361.
Ponce drove in her third run of the weekend and 27th of the season with her sixth-inning single.
GW's other hit was Mia Parker's 12th double of the season in the second.
After wrapping their spring home slate at 13-3, the Buff and Blue close out the regular season next weekend at UMass before getting ready for the A-10 Championship, which will be held May 11-14 at George Mason.
