Lange pitches one-hit gem, Spell clobbers pair of long balls
AMHERST, Mass. -Â GW softball continued its dominant run on the road in conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.
Sierra Lange customarily stole the show in the opener, a 1-0, eight-inning triumph, before the Buff & Blue offense erupted behind Maddie Spell in an 11-1 thrashing in the second game.
Having already clinched the regular season title, GW is now 20-3 in A-10 play and is a perfect 11-0 on the road in conference games. The Colonials have won 12 straight road games overall, dating back to late February.Â
GW 1, UMass 0 (8 innings):Â Lange pitched GW to a win in the first game, tossing her first-ever complete game one-hitter, even going the extra inning in the process, dropping her season-long ERA to 2.37.
After yielding a leadoff single in the second, Lange set down the final 21 Minutewomen she faced in the phenomenal effort. She also tied her season-high with 10 strikeouts.
Offensively the Buff & Blue were held in check through the first seven frames, stranding five runners. In the eighth, though, Lange broke through with a leadoff double before moving to third on a flyout from Alexa Williams. Alessandra Ponce then slammed a double to right-center, scoring Lange with the game's only run.
GW 11, UMass 1:Â GW had no issues offensively in the second game, scoring nine runs over the last three innings to pull away for the win.
The Buff & Blue broke through in the second on back-to-back two-out RBI knocks from Taylor Puig and Lange. UMass got a run back in the last of the third against Maddy Dwyer, but the graduate student buckled down to strand two runners.
Dwyer helped her own cause with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, preceding the first career grand slam from Spell to break things open at 7-1.Â
After an insurance tally in the sixth, Spell clocked another long ball leading off the seventh to make it 9-1. The sophomore finished the game going 2-for-4 with her first career multi-dinger game, setting career highs in runs scored (3) and RBI (5).
Ponce capped off the contest with a two-run single to make it 11-1. The grad student went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.
Dwyer earned her eighth win of the year in the circle, going six innings while allowing a run on five hits and striking out three.
