Colonials finish off sweep of UMass, 7-0
AMHERST, Mass. -Â Sierra Lange capped off her phenomenal regular season with her second career no-hitter in a 7-0 whitewashing of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.
The graduate student needed just 99 pitches to author the seven-inning gem that was the sixth no-no in program history, joining her five-inning effort against Saint Joseph's last season.
The Plano, Texas, native set down the first seven she faced before allowing a runner to reach on a dropped third strike in the third. The only other runner to reach was a two-out walk in the fourth before Lange retired the final 10 she faced.
With a seven-run cushion, Lange coaxed three straight pop-ups on six pitches in the last of the seventh to finish off the feat.
Offensively, GW got on the board with a pair of runs in the third with Alessandra Ponce cracking the egg on an RBI double before Alexa Williams scored on a wild pitch.
The Buff & Blue then put together a four-run rally in the fifth with RBI knocks from Williams, Maggie Greco and Maddie Spell. Maddy Dwyer recorded a pair of RBIs via a walk in the fifth and a groundout in the seventh.
UP NEXT: By virtue of winning the regular season title, GW has earned the top seed in this week's A-10 Championship. The Colonials will begin their push for a repeat title on Thursday at noon vs. either No. 4 Saint Louis or No. 5 Dayton at the George Mason Softball Complex. The full bracket for the double-elimination tournament can be found here.
