Colonials erase 12-point deficit, fall short in regular season finale
BRONX, N.Y. - GW men's basketball faced a 12-point deficit with nine minutes remaining on Saturday afternoon at Fordham, but went on an 18-6 run to even things up with four minutes left. From there, though, missed opportunities at the charity stripe cost the Colonials dearly in a 70-66 setback.
GW's comeback was made possible by a quartet of 3-pointers in a four-minute stretch, the last of which came from Brayon Freeman to make it 61-59. Ricky Lindo Jr. then got a steal and a breakaway dunk to even things at 61 with 4:38 remaining.
The game remained tied until Fordham's Antrell Charlton's layup with 3:07 remaining. Joe Bamisile was fouled on the ensuing possession and split the trip, to keep the Rams in front by one.
The missed free throws proved costly down the stretch as the Buff & Blue missed three from the charity stripe, including the front end of a 1-and-1. GW also had a pair of game-tying 3-point chances go awry in the final minutes. For the game, GW ended up 8-of-18 at the line, compared to 14-of-20 for Fordham.
The Rams were led by Chuba Ohams, who had a dominant Senior Day performance with 23 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Darius Quisenberry had 18 and two steals.
GW was paced by Freeman, who reached double figures for the sixth straight game with 17 points and five assists. Brendan Adams added 12, while the Buff & Blue's dynamic duo of Joe Bamisile (11 points) and James Bishop (8) were held below 20 combined points for just the second time this year.
GW will now await its seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship with the Colonials' first game scheduled for Thursday. The full bracket is scheduled to be announced on Saturday night.
