Colonials unable to contain hot-shooting UMass in 99-88 setback
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball entered this week's A-10 Championship with optimism thanks to its highest seed in five years and the aid of playing just two miles from campus. When the ball was tipped on Thursday night at Capital One Arena, though, GW's defense had no answer for the league's top 3-point unit as Massachusetts torched the nets in a 99-88 victory.
After holding the Minutemen relatively in check in the regular season meeting last month, GW surrendered four threes in the opening six minutes to set the tone. UMass ended up canning nine long balls in a scintillating first half that saw the Minuteman go into the locker room up by 20, 56-36.
GW came out of intermission with renewed enthusiasm, scoring the first five points and having a chance to completely flip the momentum in the first minute on a turnover and a 3-pointer, but was unable to convert the chance.
The Buff & Blue put up 52 points in the second half and cut the lead to 11 with 4:44 remaining following a Joe Bamisile 3-pointer, but a charge call on GW's ensuing offensive possession stalled the comeback attempt as the Colonials would get no closer.
The Colonials ultimately shot 53% for the game and hit eight threes of their own, but UMass never wilted in, shooting 52% and canning 12 trifectas. GW was done in by 18 costly turnovers, which led to 31 Minutemen points.
GW was led by A-10 Third Team performer Joe Bamisile, who scored 17 of his 25 points after halftime in an 11-of-20 showing from the floor. All-Rookie selection Brayon Freeman continued his late-season ascension with 18 points and seven assists. Third Team honoree James Bishop chipped in 15 points while Ricky Lindo Jr. double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brendan Adams gave GW five in double digits with 10 points.
