WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball starts its 44th appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a second round matchup against No. 10 Masschussetts at 6 p.m. Thursday. Live coverage is available on USA Network.
ALL-CONFERENCE AWARDS: Joe Bamisile and James Bishop earned A-10 Third Team All-Conference recognition on Tuesday while Brayon Freeman earned a spot on the All-Rookie team. GW placed multiple student-athletes on the All-Conference team for the first time since 2016. Freeman is GW's second All-Rookie selection in three years under Jamion Christian after the program did not have one from 2011-19. Bamisile and Bishop are the second and third All-Conference honorees under Christian (Jamison Battle, 3rd Team, 2020-21).
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: GW is looking to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017 en route to its third A-10 Championship. The Colonials have won at least one game in the Championship in seven of the last eight seasons and are 24-11 all-time as the better seed. GW is the No. 7 seed for the first time since 2001 when it made a run to the A-10 semifinals. The Buff & Blue are 3-5 as the No. 7 seed in the championship.
IGNORE THE NOISE: GW was projected to finish 13th in this year's A-10 preseason poll, but ultimately finished in seventh. The six-spot leap was tied for the largest in the league this season. The Buff & Blue earned its most league victories (8) since the 2016-17 season, which was also the last time it earned a first round bye in the A-10 Championship.
HISTORY VS. UMASS: GW holds a 45-29 edge in the all-time series against UMass, and has won nine straight games against the Minutemen. GW has not lost to UMass since Feb. 15, 2014. The nine-game winning streak is GW's longest active against any team and tied for the third-longest against any A-10 team in program history.
ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN: Despite announcing last Tuesday that head coach Matt McCall would not return next season, UMass won its last two games of the season to earn the No. 10 seed in this week's Championship. The Minutemen erased a double-digit deficit to win in overtime at George Mason to end the campaign and earn consecutive wins for the first time since early December.
UMass has the 49th-best offense nationally, averaging 1.113 points per possession, but has the 17th-worst defense in the country, giving up 1.135 points per possession. The Minutemen play at the fastest tempo in the A-10 and shoot 37.3% from beyond the arc (31st NCAA). Noah Fernandes leads a quartet of double-figure scorers with 14.0 ppg, but was held to four points on 1-of-11 shooting in GW's 77-68 victory in Amherst last month.
