3/2/2022 5:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WILMINGTON, Del.- George Washington women's basketball has been led by its defense all season, and things were no different during the opening round of the A-10 Championship. The Colonials held St. Bonaventure to just eight points in the fourth quarter, while dropping 18 of their own en route to a 54-49 comeback victory.
Early in the first quarter, GW's offense was firing on all cylinders. Maxine Engel dropped 10 points in the first eight minutes and the Buff & Blue jumped out to a 16-4 lead. However, the second stanza was a complete 180 for the Buff & Blue, as St. Bonaventure held them to just two points, and turned the 12-point deficit into a 23-18 halftime lead.
In the third, GW began to chip away, and while it still entered the final frame trailing its A-10 rival, the deficit was only five. In the fourth quarter, Kyara Frames and Mayowa Taiwo locked the win down for GW. The duo combined to score 14 of GW's final 18 points. Frames was especially lethal in the final 90 seconds, burying a triple to give GW its first lead of the second half with 1:36 on the clock before hitting a dagger from downtown with 18 seconds on the clock to put GW up five.
Frames finished the day with a season-high 17 points, while Taiwo scored 14 to go along with 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. For the Bonnies, Tori Harris dropped 18, while Asianae Johnson added 17.
Next up, GW will return to the Chase Fieldhouse for a second round match-up against No. 5 seed La Salle. Tip-off between the Colonials and Explorers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday with live coverage available on ESPN+.
