Mayowa Taiwo leads the all GW scorers with 15 points
PITTSBURGH, Pa - On a warm February night in Pittsburgh, it was the team defenses from George Washington and Duquesne that kept the respective offenses cold at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. While Duquesne put forth a persistent effort, the Colonials defense outlasted its competition on its way to a narrow 50-48 win Wednesday night.
From the opening tip, it was clear that defense was going to reign in the Steel City. Both teams struggled to find consistency shooting the ball early, with both the Dukes and Colonials finishing the first quarter shooting under 30 percent. GW continued to chip away at their A-10 rivals in the second quarter and eventually went into halftime with a slim 21-20 lead.
In the third quarter, the Dukes showed signs of cracking the game open when they dropped 17 points, including three triples, and took a five-point lead into the final frame. As has been the case all year though, Coach Caroline McCombs' squad never quit. The GW defense bunkered down in the final 10 minutes and held Duquesne to just two field goals on 16 attempts. The Colonials went on to outscore their rivals 18-11 in the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.
Mayowa Taiwo was the star of the show for GW, pouring in 15 points and grabbing seven boards on the night. Maxine Engel, making her second career start, also had an impressive night, pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. For Duquesne, first-year Megan McConnell had active hands all night. She stole the ball a career-high eight times for the Dukes and was a constant thorn in GW's side.
With their first A-10 win in hand, GW will now return home to the Charles E. Smith Center for a Saturday afternoon date with St. Bonaventure. Tip-off against the Bonnies is slated for 2 p.m.
