Colonials and Wildcats tangle for first time since 4OT thriller in 2020
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball looks to extend its winning streak to three games when it hosts league-leading Davidson at the Smith Center on Saturday. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
UPDATED FAN VISITOR POLICY: For indoor events at the Charles E. Smith Center, in compliance with DC regulations and the citywide vaccine mandate for entertainment venues, all guests ages 5-and-over will need to show their proof of vaccination by one of the following methods:
Â
* The CLEAR app, or VaxYes app on a mobile device
* Physical Center for Disease Control (CDC) vaccination card
* Digital copy of CDC vaccination card
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE:Â James Bishop's three-game tear is unprecedented in recent GW history as no one this century can match Bishop's three straight games of 25 or more points. The last Colonial to accomplish the feat was SirValiant Brown from Nov. 21-30, 1999. Brown scored 31 points vs. Houston, 33 off the bench vs. South Florida and 33 more at Ohio en route to A-10 Rookie of the Year honors.
Bishop's 82 points in the last three games (27.3 ppg) are the most for a Colonial since Chris Monroe also had 82 points in a three-game stretch from Nov. 24-Dec. 2, 2001. Monroe had 34 in an OT win against Yale, scored 21 vs. Boston University and then 27 vs. UConn.
SHOOT THE LIGHTS OUT:Â GW was a remarkable 13-of-22 (59.1%) from beyond the arc in Wednesday's victory, including a 7-of-10 showing from Joe Bamisile. Maceo Jack was the last Colonial to hit seven triples in a game, doing so in the quadruple overtime game vs. Davidson on Jan. 29, 2020. Prior to that, Yuta Watanabe, now a member of the Toronto Raptors, was the last Colonial with seven long balls in regulation, doing so on March 7, 2015 vs. UMass.
The one game improved the Buff & Blue's season 3-point shooting percentage by 1.5% from 30.1% to 31.6% and Bamisile's individual numbers by 3.9% from 30.8% to 34.7%.
A WIN IS A WIN:Â Three of GW's four A-10 victories have come down to the final possession as the Colonials have earned two-point wins over Rhode Island and La Salle and a one-point triumph over George Mason. In sum, GW has won four league games by a combined 14 points. The Colonials are now 4-1 in games decided by five points or less this season, improving to 10-13 during Coach Christian's tenure.
The triumph at Rhode Island was the Buff & Blue's first win away from home this year, the first when trailing at halftime and the second when behind with 5:00 left in the game (George Mason). GW added a third win when trailing with 5:00 left when it beat Fordham on Jan. 30.
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS:Â The top team in the A-10 standings, Davidson enters playing receiving votes in both national polls after winning 17 of its last 18 games, including an 81-76 victory at preseason favorite St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. The Wildcats possess one of the best offenses in the country, shooting 49.2% as a team from the field (7th NCAA) and 40.8% from beyond the arc (5th NCAA). The end result is the fifth-best effective field goal percentage (56.9%) in the NCAA and the 11th-most efficient offense with 1.168 points per possession.
Balance has been the key for Davidson as they have three scorers - Hyunjung Lee (16.0, 6th), Foster Loyer (15.7, 8th) and Luka Brajkovic (14.7, 15th) - in the top 15 of the league in points per game. Brajkovic is second in the conference, shooting 60% from the floor, while Loyer tops the loop with his 45.7% marksmanship from downtown.
