Bishop continues hot run with 26 points
WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's basketball team welcomed Davidson to D.C. for a Saturday matinee and the most boisterous crowd of the season at the Charles E. Smith Center was given a classic.
The Buff and Blue were ready for the A-10's leader and answered the bell with a scorching first half. GW shot 14-of-28 in the opening 20 minutes, including 7-of-14 threes and a perfect 7-of-7 effort at the line, led by the extraordinary talents of James Bishop. The Baltimore product unleashed 19 points in the first 11 minutes and went into the locker room with 21 points at the intermission after canning 5-of-7 threes and his team up, 42-34.
Davidson erased the eight-point halftime deficit with an opening 15-5 salvo before the under-16 minute timeout of the second half to take a 49-47 lead, and extended its push to 24-10 to assume a 58-52 edge with 11:29 to play. From there the barn burner only got hotter.
Back-to-back threes from Bishop and Joe Bamisile knotted the game minutes later at 63 apiece, and the combatants traded blows down the stretch. Bishop answered a Davidson three with two free throws at the 6:18 mark to put him over 25 points for the fourth straight game, and Bamisile lit up Smith Center with another three on the next possession to square things at 68.
Bamisile was everything in the closing minutes for GW as yet another three was the equalizer at 71-71 and a subsequent Bamisile bucket netted the game's final tie with 1:05 to play, before the Wildcats closed with the game's final five points.
Davidson's Luka Brajkovic simply proved to be too much on the interior for George Washington to contain. The big man shot 10-of-12 after halftime en route to 24 second-half points as he went on to finish with a game-high 30 points.
Bishop finished with a team-high 26 points, while Bamisile had 11 points after halftime to finish with 19. Between the high-scoring pair, GW got 45 points on 14-of-28 shooting with 9-of-17 coming from downtown.
Now midway through the A-10 slate, GW hits the road to Massachusetts for a Wednesday night battle with the Minutemen. Tip time from Amherst is 7 p.m. on ESPN+ as GDUB looks to get back on the winning side of the ledger and get back to .500 in conference play.
