Buff & Blue fell to South Carolina & Virginia on Saturday
COLUMBIA, S.C. - GW softball continued its challenging opening weekend on Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader vs. Power 5 opponents at the Gamecock Invitational.
The Buff and Blue fell to host South Carolina, 14-5 in five innings, to begin the day at Carolina Softball Stadium before following with a 6-1 loss to Virginia.
Alexa Williams had a pair of hits and drove in three runs in the opener, while Hannah Eslick posted an RBI in each game.
South Carolina 14, GW 5 (5 innings):Â The Buff and Blue scored in three of their five at-bats, but the host Gamecocks got rolling offensively to claim the run-rule victory.
Facing the alma mater of Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker, GW jumped on top quickly, taking a 2-0 lead within the first three batters on an error after a bunt by Maggie Greco, a Sierra Lange double and Williams' two-run single.
South Carolina flipped momentum by plating six runs on five hits in the second inning. Maddie Gallagher produced a two-run triple that tied the game, and following two more run-scoring hits, Katie Prebble pushed the lead to 6-2 with a two-run home run.
GW got two runs back in the third, again fueled by the top of the order. Williams came through with her second RBI hit of the day, and Lange later came home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Gamecocks added on with four in the third and four more in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Eslick drove in GW's final run with an RBI double in the fourth that brought home Maddy Dwyer.
Maddie Spell made her collegiate debut in the circle and recorded her first strikeout during an inning of relief work.
Virginia 6, GW 1:Â The Buff and Blue couldn't overcome Virginia's four-run third inning and a gem from Mikayla Houge in the second game of the day.
After their first seven batters went down in order, four straight Cavaliers reached base in the third and all of them came around to score. Katie Goldberg recorded a two-run single and later scored in the frame.
Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, GW got on the scoreboard with an RBI single from Eslick scoring pinch runner Gabby Polsky. The Buff and Blue were looking for more with two on and nobody out, but Houge recovered to get three straight hitters to squash the threat and went on to record her first victory of the season with a complete game.
GW produced five hits vs. UVA, led by Dwyer's first career multi-hit performance. Eslick, Alessandra Ponce and Abby Schaub had the other hits.
A graduate transfer via Stanford, Dwyer was solid in her Buff and Blue pitching debut, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with seven Ks over the seven innings.
UP NEXT:Â GW closes out its opening weekend on Sunday morning, facing Lipscomb in a 10:30 a.m. start.
