Buff & Blue land first win under Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker
COLUMBIA, S.C. - GW softball landed its first win under Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker on Sunday, capping its opening weekend of the new season with a 4-1 defeat of Lipscomb at the Gamecock Invitational.
After facing three Power 5 opponents over the past two days in a challenging start to the spring, the Buff and Blue used a four-run third inning and a gem pitching performance from Sierra Lange to down the Bisons in their tournament finale at Carolina Softball Stadium.
GW got a spark from the bottom of the order during its decisive rally. Hannah Eslick, Maddie Spell and Abby Schaub reached in succession to load the bases.
The top of the order handled bringing them home. Lange drove in a run with a sac fly before Alexa Williams and Mia Parker came through with two-out RBI hits. The lead reached 4-0 when Williams scampered home on a passed ball.
That was plenty of offense to back Lange, who earned her first win of the season and the 68th of her career. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, held Lipscomb scoreless into the final inning, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts in her complete game.
The Bisons got on the board with Maci Cunconan's RBI triple in the seventh, but Lange recovered with back-to-back Ks to close out the victory.
Offensively, Eslick had a pair of hits to finish the weekend with a team-best .364 average, while Williams tallied her team-leading fourth RBI in as many games.
Spell's third-inning single was her first career hit a day after making her collegiate pitching debut.
GW heads South again next weekend for UNCG's Spiro Classic. The Buff and Blue are scheduled for four games over two days vs. the host Spartans and Rider.
