Buff & Blue to play four games at UNCG
Coming off a challenging opening weekend, GW softball will face another strong test at UNC Greensboro's Spiro Classic.
The Buff and Blue are set to play a pair of split doubleheaders vs. the 2021 Southern Conference champion Spartans and Rider at UNCG Softball Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT:Â After being edged by three straight Power 5 opponents to open the season at the Gamecock Invitational, GW landed its first win under Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker last Sunday with a 4-1 defeat of Lipscomb.
Sierra Lange was tremendous in the circle vs. the Bisons, allowing one run on four hits with eight Ks in her 68th career win. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, recorded a pair of quality starts on opening weekend, compiling a 3.34 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 14 2/3 total innings.
Hannah Eslick registered a team-best .364 batting average at the tournament with a double and a pair of RBIs, while Alexa Williams drove in four runs in as many games, including a three-RBI performance vs. South Carolina.
ALL-AROUND ADDITION: Maddy Dwyer showcased her versatility in her first weekend competing as a member of the Buff and Blue. The graduate transfer via Stanford provided a boost in the circle with a complete game vs. Virginia featuring seven strikeouts, and she was also a regular in the batting order over the four games, contributing a pair of hits and a run scored.
BUFF & BLUE DEBUTS:Â After redshirting last season, Maddie Spell made her collegiate debut last weekend.Â
The Georgia native made her first pitching appearance on Saturday with an inning of relief work vs. South Carolina and recorded her first career K. She was in the lineup in Sunday's victory as the designated player and notched her first career hit as part of a four-run third inning.
Sidney Torres and Gabby Polsky also logged their first collegiate action down at South Carolina.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â UNCG was picked atop the Southern Conference preseason poll after winning the conference title and advancing to the Athens Regional a year ago.
The Spartans dropped three of four games as part of a quality opening weekend at FIU's Felsberg Invitational. Makenna Matthijs (Player of the Year) and Morgan Scott (Pitcher of the Year) topped the SoCon preseason honors.
Rider makes its 2022 debut this weekend. The Broncs went 17-20 last season, closing out the spring as the No. 7 seed at the MAAC Championship. Elena Gonzalez is back after being named to the NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team.
UP NEXT:Â GW heads to the Liberty Classic next weekend for matchups vs. Maine, Charleston Southern and the host Flames.
