Four different Colonials score in double-digits during the win
WASHINGTON- For three quarters of play on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center, GW women's basketball struggled to sustain anything positive in an Atlantic 10 battle against visiting St. Bonaventure. Then the fourth quarter happened. The Buff and Blue flipped the script and looked like world-beaters in a massive comeback win against the Bonnies, 60-47.
GW was outscored in each of the first three quarters (11-8, 16-14, 18-15) and was 0-for-14 from three-point range in the first 30 minutes, but none of that mattered once the game entered the final stanza. It would be difficult to discern whether the defense keyed the offense or the offense created its own momentum with stellar marksmanship, but either way George Washington was special on both ends in the fourth. The team connected on 9-of-14 field goal attempts in the final quarter, including 4-of-8 from deep, to overcome what was once an 11-point deficit to secure the 13-point margin of victory. Equally impressive, if not more so, was the defensive intensity that stymied the Bonnies to just 1-of-13 shooting in the final 10 minutes.
Sierra Bell was sensational off the bench for GW, as her 13 points in the 13-point win gave her team all it needed to run away with the game at the end. Bell connected on 5-of-7 field goals in the game en route to 13 points in just 18:15 of action. Bell had plenty of help too from the veteran presence of Kyara Frames (11 points, seven rebounds and three assists) who steadied the game with her experienced presence on the day when she was celebrated for being a 1,000-point career scorer. Sheslanie Laureano was also critical in the win, netting 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting and lighting a fire under her teammates with her spirited hustle and play. Mayowa Taiwo matched Laureano's physicality, on her way to 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.
The home team won the turnover battle by forcing 11 miscues and only coughing it up seven times, which in turn led to a 13-2 edge in points off turnovers. GW was also dominant inside with a 34-12 advantage in points in the paint and a 47-39 rebounding cushion. The squad saw five players grab at least five rebounds, paced by first-year walk-on Maxine Engel's eight boards in a starting role.
The Bonnies' Asianae Johnson paced the visitors with 17 points, but it took her 18 shots to get there as like her teammates, the offensive sledding was nearly impossible for the visitors late in the game.
Now the winners of two-in-a-row, GW will look to make it three-straight in a special Valentine's Day matinee against Saint Louis, Monday at 2pm at home on ESPN+.
