The Buff & Blue and Spiders go head-to-head at noon on New Year’s Eve
WASHINGTON – Following a 61-51 victory over Coppin State to close out its non-conference schedule, GW women's basketball will return to the court on the last day of 2022 when it travels to Richmond to begin A-10 play against the Spiders. Tip-off on New Year's Eve is scheduled for noon from the Robins Center.
STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH
GW will enter A-10 play this weekend in strong form, having won three-straight games and four of its last five. During the five-game stretch, GW has averaged 69.8 ppg and is averaging a +15 scoring margin over its opponents. The Colonials have been especially lethal in the third quarter during the recent run, outscoring opponents 92-54.
Individually, Mia Lakstigala (13.3), Nya Robertson (12.0), and Jayla Thornton (11.3) are all averaging in double-digits over the last five games, while Mayowa Taiwo is averaging just shy of a double-double with 9.8 points per game and 12.4 rebounds per game.
HEADING DOWNTOWN FOR A-10 PLAY
As GDUB gears up for its conference season, the Colonials will look to put their 3-point shooting dominance on display. Currently, GW is shooting 36.5 percent from beyond the arc, which is the highest 3-point shooting percentage in the Atlantic 10 and the 29th highest in the country. The Buff & Blue are also averaging 8.9 threes a night, which is 12th most in the NCAA.
Lakstigala, Robertson, and Thornton all rank in the conference's top-10 in 3-point field goals made. Lakstigala's 46.4 percent clip from downtown is fourth best among all A-10 players.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond enters its A-10 opener with an impressive 10-3 record on the year and as winners of four straight games. The Spiders' success in 2022-23 has been due to their excellent ability to play on both sides of the ball, with their scoring offense ranking fourth in the A-10 (69.8 ppg) and their scoring defense ranking second (59.6).
Individually, Richmond has four players averaging double-digit points a night. Junior Addie Budnik leads the potent Spiders' attack, averaging 14.2 nightly and boasting an impressive 49.6 shooting percentage.
HISTORY AGAINST RICHMOND
Saturday will mark the 44th all-time meeting between George Washington and the University of Richmond, with the Colonials holding a 26-17 edge in the series. However, despite GW's historical success against the Spiders, Richmond has won the last five games.
