GW set to face the Eagles Thursday at 12 noon
WASHINGTON – George Washington women's basketball will put a bow on its 2022-23 non-conference schedule on Thursday when it faces the Coppin State Eagles in a midweek matinee. Tip-off from the Smith Center is scheduled for Thursday at noon with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW welcomed Wilmington to Smith Center and easily took care of business in an 88-40 thrashing of the Wildcats. GW saw little defensive resistance from the opposition defense, connecting at a .507 clip from the floor and a .414 from three-point range.
Mayowa Taiwo's presence was felt throughout the victory, as the redshirt senior recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double while also pulling down her 600th career rebound late in the first half.
150 FOR MCCOMBS:
George Washington's victory against Wilmington was an historic one, as it gave head coach Caroline McCombs her 150th career win. McCombs began her head coaching career in 2014 with Stony Brook and earned her first career victory in her first game against Saint Peter's, defeating the Peacocks 56-40.
The win moved McCombs 50 games over .500 for her career (150-100) and gives her a .600 career win percentage. Of McCombs' 150 career victories, 20 have come in the last two seasons as GW's head coach.
DOUBLE DOUBLING DOWN:
Mayowa Taiwo has been crushing the competition to close out non-conference play. After recording a double-double in her last game against Wilmington, Taiwo now recorded a double-double in back-to-back games and has accomplished the feat in three of the last four contests.
During this four-game span, Taiwo is averaging 10.2 points a game and 12.7 rebounds per game. She has also tied her game-high in rebounds (17) twice during the stretch.
SCOUTING COPPIN STATE:
The Eagles enter Thursday afternoon's game at 3-9 and are coming off a 59-51 defeat at George Mason in their last contest. Despite the loss, Jewel Watkins shined for Coppin State with a 21-point performance. The sophomore has been leading the charge all year for the Eagles, ranking first on the team in points per game (14.3) and made threes (24), and she has had eight double-digit scoring games.
