The Buff & Blue and Eagles tip-off Thursday at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON – George Washington women's basketball will look to sweep its pair of road contests against D.C. foes when it travels to American University to face the Eagles on Thursday evening. Tip-off between GW and American will be at 7 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
NYA'S NUMBERS:
First-year Nya Robertson put on a show in GW's last contest at Howard, scoring a career-high 27 points in just her third collegiate game. Through her first three contests, the Fort Worth, Texas native is averaging 12.3 ppg, while leading the team with 11 assists.
Currently, Robertson ranks 21st among all A-10 players in points per game and ranks in the top-15 in both assists and assist/turnover ratio (1.1).
HEADING DOWNTOWN EARLY:
In the offseason, Head Coach Caroline McCombs said her team put an added emphasis on improving outside shooting, and through three games it looks to be paying off. Entering Thursday night, GW has made the third most three-pointers in the A-10 (28) and it is averaging just over nine threes a game.
Individually, Mia Lakstigala has been the biggest contributor to GW's success from downtown. Lakstigala is currently shooting 61 percent from three, the fourth-highest clip in the conference.
HISTORY AGAINST AMERICAN:
Thursday will mark the 30th meeting between George Washington and American University. Currently, GW holds a 15-14 career record against its neighbors from Washington, D.C.'s Spring Valley neighborhood. Last season, Coach McCombs picked up her first career victory in Buff & Blue when GW downed AU in its season opener at the Smith Center, 58-47.
Despite a winning record against the Eagles, GW has not won a contest at Bender Arena since 2014.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES:
Fresh off a Patriot League championship in 2021-22, American will enter this year looking to return to the NCAA tournament, albeit with a new head coach. Following Megan Gebbia's departure to Wake Forest, Tiffany Coll was named the 14th head coach in AU women's basketball history after nine years with the program.
As a team, AU returns eight players from last season's championship squad, including Lauren Stack who started in all 26 Patriot League games. Last season, Stack set and broke several career highs for herself in points (12), rebounds (8), and blocks (2) per game.
