The Colonials and Spiders face off on Wednesday afternoon from the Smith Center
WASHINGTON- Following a dominant 64-31 victory against West Chester to close out the non-conference slate, GW women's basketball will tip-off conference play when it welcomes Richmond to the Smith Center on Wednesday for a matinee. Tip-off against the Spiders is scheduled for 12 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
NON-CONFERENCE NUMBERS
Following GW's win over West Chester, the 2021 non-conference slate for the Colonials officially came to a close. For Caroline McCombs' squad, it was a hard-fought 13 game stretch that saw GW finish above .500 in the non-conference for the first time since 2016.
Additionally, GW's seven non-conference wins were the most for the Colonials since they won eight in 2016-17.
Statistically, GW exits the non-conference portion of the schedule with a scoring defense ranked 23rd in the nation and a rebounding offense that is top five in the A-10.
CONFERENCE CONFIDENCE
While Wednesday will mark Coach McCombs' first game on GW's sidelines against an A-10 opponent, McCombs has proven to be a master of success in conference play during her coaching career.
During her seven years as the head coach of Stony Brook, McCombs finished an impressive 69-41 (.627) against the America East, including a combined 46-15 (.754) her last four years. McCombs finished with a .500 or better record in conference play all seven seasons with the Seawolves.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
The Spiders, who were picked seventh in the A-10 preseason poll, have had one of the best non-conference runs for any A-10 team this season. The Spiders enter Wednesday with a record of 10-4, having won six straight games. Offensively, they have been a juggernaut, scoring more than 80 points in their last seven contests, and breaking the 90-point mark in three victories this year.
Leading the Spiders is a familiar face in senior Kate Klimkiewicz and an up-and-comer in sophomore Addie Budnik. Budnik, who currently leads the Spiders in points (13.7) and rebounds per game (6.6), has been Richmond's go-to option since game one, having played 60 more minutes than any other player. Meanwhile, Klimkiewicz, who was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team this preseason, is second on the team in points (12.5) and rebounds (5.7).
HISTORY AGAINST RICHMOND
The Buff & Blue has history on their side against Richmond. This contest will be the 43rd meeting between the programs, with GW holding a 26-16 advantage through the first 42 games.
