Colonials and Minutewomen tip-off at 2 p.m. on ESPN+
WASHINGTON- Following a mid-week trip to New York City, GW women's basketball returns home to the Charles E. Smith Center for a Saturday afternoon match-up against the UMass Minutewomen. The two sides will square off at 2:00 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
THREE FOR ALL
On Wednesday against Fordham, the Colonials saw strong offensive performances from Nya Lok, Sheslanie Laureano and Mayowa Taiwo, who each scored in double figures. Wednesday marked the fifth time this year that GW has had at least three players score in double figures in the same game.
For Lok, who is currently the Buff & Blue's leading scorer, Wednesday marked her fourth double-digit scoring contest in just her 10th game for GW.
SHESLANIE STAT PACK
Despite having just 12 NCAA D-I games under her belt, Sheslanie Laureano is slowly but surely making her impact felt throughout the A-10. Following Wednesday's game, Laureano now sits in the top-20 of three individual A-10 statistical categories: 3-pointers per game (1.5), blocked shots per game (0.8) and steals per game (1.8).
Laureano has also gotten off to a hot shooting start in conference play, entering Saturday shooting 42.1 percent from the field, and 42.9 percent from three.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
UMass, who was picked sixth in the A-10 preseason poll, began its season with an impressive 12-2 run during its non-conference slate, including an eight-game win streak to start the season. However, in A-10 play, the Minutewomen have hit a snag, falling to Rhode Island and Dayton over the last week. The losses marked the first time this year that UMass has lost back-to-back games.
Offensively, the Minutewomen are led by a pair of scorers ranked in the conference's top 10. Graduate student and A-10 preseason First Team selection Sam Breen is averaging 17.2 points a game, while junior Sydney Taylor chips in 15.5 per game. Meanwhile, Destiney Philoxy, who is also averaging double-digit points (11.8 ppg), leads the conference with 5.4 assists per game.
HISTORY AGAINST UMASS
Saturday will mark the 54th meeting between GW and Massachusetts. GW's 54 games against the Minutewomen is the second-most for the Colonials against a conference opponent, trailing only Duquesne, who GW has played 71 times. Entering Saturday, GW boasts a 43-10 record against their rivals from Amherst, and the Colonials have won eight straight games against the Minutewomen dating back to 2014.
The two sides last faced off on January 26, 2020, with GW coming away with the slim 50-47 victory. Mayowa Taiwo led all Colonial scorers with 14 points and also chipped in eight rebounds.
